Inspiration from music

May 13, 2017 by Taylor Reynolds

Do you play music while you work? Does it help keep you focused? Or do you find the noise a distraction?

I love music! But it’s gotta be the right type for the work I’m doing. At my office day-job, I turn Spotify on for background noise and jump between ’90s rock, ’00s pop and Ed Sheeran. I’m a little obsessed with Ed, I will admit. If I’m writing or editing and really need to focus, I stick with no-words. My favorite playlists include those that feature cello or violin pieces and electronic beats with no lyrics. Spotify has some great “study” or “focus” playlists like Brain Food.

And then there are the times when I want some sexy music as inspiration for a sexy scene. I’ve created a playlist called “Night-time” that runs the gamut…

It starts relatively innocuous with older songs like Nina Simone’s “I Want a Little Sugar in my Bowl” and Etta James’s “I Want to Make Love to You.” Okay, that one is pretty obvious, but somehow less explicit than some of the others.

I’ve got some moody tunes that make me think of rainy nights and desperate embraces – “Wicked Game” and “I’ll Be Your Lover, Too.” Then we get a bit hotter with “Fever” and “Me & U” before really changing the sound with these amazing remixes of “You’re the One that I Want” (it’s phenomenal, I promise!) and “Crazy in Love.”

“SAIL” is somehow one of the dirtiest songs ever produced though it’s nowhere near as explicit as “Closer.” Clearly, I have a thing for a memorable bass line. I still remember the first time I heard “Closer” in a club. I was dumbfounded, you guys. I was also 19 and couldn’t get into most clubs yet. If you don’t recognize what song I’m referring to by the title alone, go ahead and search “Nine Inch Nails Closer.” Maybe watch the video too. Maybe don’t have the kids in the room when you do it.

And finally the playlist lightens up again with some sweet songs from Hozier and Rob Thomas…kinda the afterglow 😉

Do you have specific playlists for specific tasks? In addition to this sexytimes one, I also love listening to Parov Stellar and other electro swing acts while I cook or bake (electro swing is fun!). And dance beats are my go-to for cleaning the house.
