What motivates you?
For me, it’s music. No, it’s not what drives me to do the things I do, but it keeps me going when I’ve lost my way or can’t focus. Music is the background that holds me up when the quiet (or the noise of a coffee house) is too much.
As a young girl, I wanted to be a country singer. I’d even written a song, but that dream flew out the window as my brothers made fun of my singing voice on a long trip to grandma’s house one summer.
But looking back, I think the reason I love music is the same reason I write today. I love a good story. Music speaks to me and touches on emotions that I can relate to.
For each book I write, I carefully select a soundtrack of songs that bring up the emotions I want to evoke in that story. Anytime I work on that particular book, I pull up the soundtrack associated with it and I’m pulled back into that world.
Here are the soundtracks for my Scottish Historical Romances:
Highland Deception – Kip Moore – Up All Night
Highland Redemption – Luke Bryan – Crash My Party
Highland Temptation -Dierks Bentley – Riser
Highland Salvation – Starting work on this on 4/1 so I’ll decide on a soundtrack by then. Leaning toward Dierks Bentley – Black. 🙂
Highland Thief (name may change) New Series I’m working on – Cole Swindell – You Should Be Here
For the gym, my playlist is somewhat all over the place, but every time I leave the gym I’m motivated to keep working and pouring my heart into my books. These are all songs that motivate or speak to me in some way. 🙂
Holding Out for a Hero – Bonnie Tyler
Hall of Fame – The Script
Brave – Sara Bareilles
Centuries – Fall Out Boy
Country Girl – Luke Bryan
The Climb – Miley Cyrus
Fight Song – Rachel Platten
Animals – Maroon 5
Stonger – Kanye West
Hey Mama – David Guette & Nicki Minaj
Cheerleader – Omi
I Lived – OneRepublic
Addicted – Saving Abel
I’ll keep updating this list when songs speak to me, but now I want to leave you with one of my current favorites. It is a couple years old, but I didn’t hear it until recently and it just resonated. 🙂
What motivates you when you need an extra spark?
