The first three months of each year are an exciting, nerve-wracking time in the life of a romance writer (at least for those of us who are members of RWA).
This is the season when entries for the RITA and Golden Heart contests are sent to judges. These contests are the Oscars of the romance world where published (RITA) and unpublished (Golden Heart) authors submit their work to be judged by a jury of their peers.
Eek!
From now until the end of March, those of us who have skin in the game will take a knee each evening, praying our work makes the cut to the final round.
But there’s a fun side to this too – I have sitting in my TBR queue a handful of Golden Heart entries. Over the next two months, I have the awesome privilege of reading these babies, measuring them on their merits, and meting out a score. It can be daunting to assume the role of expert. The responsibility is great and I take it seriously. The opportunity to read the up and coming talent of industry is also thrilling and a treat.
I can’t wait to dive in.
