Last month, I let you know that I finally downloaded Scrivener and here is the update…
It has been great. So far I love the functionality and organization of the software. My favorite function is that it allows you to write in chunks or segments. You decide how big your segments are and how to organize them. I chose to setup my document to write scene by scene, but you could chose to write by chapter. You could also write in one long document and then easily split it into sections later. No more saving file by file – It is all in one place.
I like writing by scene because you can write the scene that inspires you at the moment of inspiration! Write chronologically or write the last chapter first. The software lets you reorder scenes and compile them into one document by clicking a few options and exporting to your favorite format.
Another feature that I like is that you can create Character and Setting Sketches directly in the document. This keeps all of your research in one place while still allowing you to exclude it when you export the document. Word counts and goals make it easy to track your progress.
As I said in last month’s blog, I waited to download Scrivener because they had not yet released a version for iPhone or iPad. The iOS version was released on July 20th! I have only been using it for a few days, but so far it is good. I am still using the desktop version, but it is nice to be able to write on the go too.
Scrivener has been great over the past month, but this is my opinion. Keep in mind that it works for me, but there are many other options. Microsoft 365, Pages and iCloud drive or the classic paper and pen – to name but a few. Find the option that works best for you!
Happy Writing!

I love Scrivener for all those reasons, and that I can easily save old version of my scenes.
