This is not an endorsement for Scrivener, but I wanted to share my experience. I have toiled with the decision of whether or not to buy Scrivener for a long time and I finally downloaded it this weekend. Why? The primary reason is because they recently announced on their Blog that they are in Beta testing for iPad!!
I travel a lot and I like to use my iPad to write. I had heard so many authors rave about the product and I just didn’t want to get hooked without having iPad access. With the announcement that they were not only in development, but also in Beta testing, I jumped at the chance to buy it.
So here are my initial thoughts. In a nutshell, I love it. It is simple organization. I have my own system for organizing my writing and I will continue to use it, but Scrivener puts everything in one place. Character sketches, locations and notes are all there! My favorite feature is the ability to write each scene independently and arrange them in separate folders. You can then move the scenes around as needed by simply dragging and dropping them to the right chapter.
I don’t really have anything negative to say at this point. I have heard that there is a steep learning curve, but I found the basics to be fairly intuitive. I know, I know. I am a bit of a nerd when it comes to technology, but I really do think setting up a project, creating scenes, adding notes and creating character sketches are easy.
The option to export in different formats took some time to understand , especially the he way the metadata is pulled in. However, it is far easier than formatting it manually.
My only real concern is that the iPad version is only in testing at this point. The posts on their Blog indicate progress so I am very hopeful the iPad version will be released soon.
I have made progress in my writing during the short time that I have used it and I hope to make more progress in the future. I am looking forward to exploring all the features it offers and for the iPad & iPhone versions to be released.
Happy Reading (& Writing)!!
