Confession: When I was little, I wanted to be a rock star. Then a movie star. Then a rock star again, or possibly a movie star princess who played in a band on the side.
And then I read the Ramona books, and I wanted to be Beverly Cleary.
But in every scenario, even the one where I became Beverly Cleary, it ended the same: Cameras flashing and people screaming while I walked the red carpet in a slinky dress, fancy hair, fur wrap, and big sunglasses.
For reference, this is me:
Yes, that’s spaghetti sauce on my glasses. Obviously, it would take a lot to get me to that movie star glamorous stage. And honestly? These days, I’m far more comfortable in bunny slippers, pajama pants, and yes, even spaghetti sauce on my glasses than I would be on the red carpet.
But I still have some writer dreams. And recently, at a Washington Romance Writers meeting, fabulous presenter Angele McQuade asked all of us in the room – including several of my fellow Romance on the Rocks authors!! – to list our crazy, wildest dreams for ourselves in our writing careers.
It was a great exercise, because even as I was writing down totally outrageous things like, “Hit the #1 spot on the New York Times list,” “Get enough fan mail to need an assistant to help sort through it all,” and “Rent out Disney World for a day,” (I literally just snort-laughed – how crazy would that be?!?!) I felt this kick of inspiration.
Even if my writing career is only a fraction as successful as my wildest, wackiest, craziest dreams, and even if the closest I ever get to being able to rent out Disney World is, erm, just going to Disney World on vacation, simply having the dream gives me something to aspire to. Something to work toward. Something bigger to reach for.
And while my big career dreams are fun and goofy and totally fabulous in their own way, what really makes me happiest every day is knowing that I’ve written a good book that I’m proud of, and that readers adore. Getting to write stories is my dream. (Especially when they’re stories like Sugared. I cannot wait for y’all to get your hands on this one.)
What’s one of your biggest dreams that you’d like to achieve in your life? 🙂
