I want to build something in the snow. Actually, I really just want to make some hot chocolate and curl up with a good book.
For those of you waiting for winter, I believe it is finally here!! By now, I am sure that you have heard that a big snowstorm is expected tomorrow in the Northeast. The DC area alone is expected to get several inches according to many local weather predictions. Given the mild winter that we have had so far, this came as a bit of a surprise to me earlier this week. However, I love snow – at least the first big snowfall of the year.
I love the way the city looks when the snow is fresh and it is completely undisturbed. I love taking comfort in a homemade soup or cup of cocoa and I love that it gives me permission to stay inside for a while. Life seems to slow down and there is no expectation to rush out into the city. So, with the news of the impending snow storm, I quickly entered my shopping list online and snagged one of the few remaining delivery times before Friday.
My grocery list is full of ingredients for soup, a hearty chili and all the accouterments for homemade hot cocoa. If we really do get one or two feet of snow, I want to be prepared. Since there is nothing we can do about it, I think it is best to make the most of it. I will be cooking on Friday night and have invited neighbors for dinner. Some of my neighbors have offered to join in the fun of cooking, so I am sure it will be a lot of fun to sample everyone’s gourmet treats.
Friday evening is for cooking and Saturday is for relaxing. Although, I will likely not be outside building a snowman, I do enjoy watching the snow on the gas lit streets of D.C. I plan on taking advantage of being inside by spending most of Saturday and Sunday near the window with several good books. There might even be a glass of wine or two in my future this weekend. Wine and good books? Yes, please.
UPDATE: My delivery came early, but was missing several items. I was able to go out and find the missing items at other locations, so I am on track to enjoy all the good food this weekend that we had planned.
Whatever your plans are, I wish you a very safe and fun weekend – even if we are snowbound.
